For most autistic adults, the biggest barriers to successful employment have NOTHING to do with the actual job tasks. Instead, the barriers are often a result of the core characteristics associated with autism (social, communication, and behavioral differences). Even for those of us who CAN shift between following workplace rules and meeting social expectations…it requires monumental cognitive effort…which, as you could’ve guessed…takes away from job performance. It’s a terrible cycle. I don’t have all the answers as this is an issue I am CURRENTLY navigating. However, I do have the language to describe it…and hopefully by giving YOU that language, you’ll be able to better understand these challenges. 💖
